Text Box:  5. Franz Joseph Haydn is our next famous composer. He was born Germany 1732, and died in 1809 at age 77. He was well-known for his cheery personality, even though he had a grumpy wife. Goulding ranks him the 5th greatest classical composer of all time. This is well-warranted because Haydn is given major credit for developing the string quartet, and the symphony…of which he wrote the incredible number of 104. Besides… he was a teacher of Mozart…who called him “Papa” …as did a lot of people. He was even an instructor of Beethoven though it must be admitted that young Beethoven didn’t like his teaching.

Such was the respect for Haydn that when Napoleon was bombarding Vienna in 1809, he ordered that the Haydn’s house be guarded. Haydn was on his deathbed at the time.

A work by him you might recognize is the Surprise Symphony
