Text Box: 40. This composer was a Frenchman who lived from 1875 until 1937…62 years. His name is Maurice Ravel (Ra vell’), ranked number 29 by Goulding. An interesting fact about him concerns his poor health. He had such a weak constitution that he failed his army physical during World War I, and instead served as an ambulance driver. His delicate health, though, didn’t prevent him from having a good time during college. He, in fact, was a member of a group that called themselves the “Apaches” due to a misguided notion that this nickname described their naughty behavior. Well, eventually Ravel settled down to write beautiful classical works, and was also well-known for orchestrating the works of others…case in point, Mussorgsky’s, Pictures at an Exhibition. The piece you heard on the CD is called Pavane (pa von) for a Dead Princess. It was written in 1899. A pavane incidentally, is a slow stately dance.
