Text Box:  22. This composer was from  Russia  and was also a real medical doctor, as well as professor of chemistry...who wrote music only as a sideline. He actually tended to write music only when he didn’t feel well and had to stay home from work. He even once remarked, “ In winter, I can compose only when I am too unwell to give my lectures, so my friends, reversing the usual custom, never say to me…I hope you are feeling well, but instead… I hope you are feeling ill.

The name of our  doctor. Is Alexander Borodin (bore’ o deen). He lived from 1833 to 1887…53 years. He is ranked number 50 by Goulding, but this low ranking is hotly contested by some of Borodin’s fans.

Borodin wrote the opera, Prince Igor, performed initially in 1890. A famous section of it is called the Polovtsian  (Po lo vetz’ cee an) Dances, the music of which was used in the song, Strangers in Paradise,  a hit by singer, Tony Bennett in the 1950’s.
