Text Box:  14. The next composer was from Hungary and was the greatest showman of his day…Franz Liszt…who was born in 1811, and died in 1886 at age 74.. Liszt was known for his expressive and amazing piano playing, and also his showy clothes. He typically wore velvet gloves which he slowly removed before playing. He always sat with his side to the audience, so everyone could see the profile of his face…which was impressive with its bold features. The custom in those days was instead for the pianist to sit with his back to the people and not interact with them. He, also, at times, played two pianos, walking between the two, mesmerizing his audiences. Liszt was such a great pianist…almost certainly the greatest of all time….that he even liked playing on pianos that were out of tune, so he could show people that he could still make the music sound normal. His ranking by Goulding is number 13. Another interesting fact about him, is that he had a daughter named Cosima, who became the much younger wife of the great operatic master… Richard Wagner, a composer you will meet later.

A famous piece by him that you heard on the CD is Love Dream, Song Number 3.

Oh, one more thing... Liszt invented a form of music called a symphonic or tone poem. It basically is a one-movement orchestral work that interprets a story from literature or history.
